Read receipts on Instagram: one chat, group chats and business inboxes

First published · Virginia Garcia

One switch for every chat, scenario by scenario

A typical request here is narrow: open one message without the sender learning that it was read. Instagram answers it with a broad instrument. The setting named Read receipts applies to the entire account, and it cannot be adjusted conversation by conversation. The table sets out what that single switch means in each situation a reader is likely to face.

ScenarioWhat the switch doesWhat remains visibleCovered by the September 24, 2026 check?
One conversation onlyNothing specific: no per-chat option exists; restriction works per personEverything, unless the switch is turned off for all chatsYes
Every chat on the accountStops showing senders that you opened their messagesNothing on this point, but you also lose sight of whether others opened yoursYes
A group chatThe account-wide switch is the only confirmed control; no group-level setting was examinedNot established: group display was outside the checkNo
A business or creator inboxNot established for these account typesNot establishedNo, personal accounts only
Online presence (activity status)Nothing: a different switch governs itYour online indicator, until that second switch is turned offYes

Two consequences follow from the table.

  • There is no selective option. A reader who wants silence in one conversation and normal receipts everywhere else cannot have both through this setting. Turning it off is an all-or-nothing decision for the account.
  • Restriction is the per-person alternative, since it acts on a single account. A restricted person no longer sees when you are online or whether you have read their messages, and receives no notice of the change. It also alters how that person’s comments and messages reach you, as set out in A dead Instagram profile link: blocked, deleted or renamed? and in the Help Centre entry Instagram keeps for restricting an account.

Before either setting is changed, three questions help to settle the choice.

  • One person or everyone? A concern about one person points to restriction; a concern about everyone points to the account-wide switch.
  • Is the loss of the other side acceptable? If it is not, the switch is the wrong tool, since that loss comes with it automatically.
  • A group or a business inbox? The section on group chats below explains why this page stays silent on both.

The settings are named here rather than traced tap by tap, because the menu route itself was not recorded during the check. This page belongs to the reference documentation of InstaViewer, a lookup service for publicly visible profiles, and it has no messaging features of its own.

Statements about Instagram’s behaviour on this page were confirmed on September 24, 2026 in the iPhone and Android apps, on personal accounts without Instagram Plus. Statements about InstaViewer describe the site on the same date. A line that bears its own date is governed by that date.

Activity status and its reverse side

Activity status is the online indicator that Instagram displays to other people. It has a switch of its own, entirely apart from read receipts, and that switch follows the same two-way logic.

  • The Instagram Help Centre calls it Show activity status. The switch is present in both apps.
  • Turning it off conceals your own online indicator from everyone.
  • In return, it conceals the online indicator of every other account, as seen from yours.
  • It leaves read receipts as they were. The two settings are independent, so an account that appears offline can still show that a message was opened, and an account that appears online can still hide it.

The scenarios divide much as they did in the first section.

  • To appear offline to everyone, this switch is the tool, and it has no per-person version.
  • To appear offline to one person only, restriction is the per-person setting, with the side effects already described.
  • To appear offline while messages also look unread, both switches must be turned off, and both reverse views are then lost together.

Each switch trades visibility for visibility: whatever an account hides from others through these two settings, it also stops seeing for itself.

Group chats and typing: what does the switch leave alone?

The September 24, 2026 check covered the switch itself: its existence, its reach across all chats and its effect in both directions. It did not cover how a conversation with several members displays reading, nor the indicator that appears while someone composes a reply. This page therefore makes no promise on those points.

  • “Seen” inside a group: no statement is made. The account-wide switch is the only control confirmed on that date. Whether a group has any setting of its own, and how it reports who has read a message once the switch is off, were not observed.
  • The typing indicator: no statement is made. Whether the read receipts switch affects it was not tested, so the safer working assumption is that typing may still be visible to the other side.
  • Replies and reactions: a reply or a reaction is itself sent to the other person, so it confirms that the message was opened, whatever the switch says.
  • Business or creator inboxes: only personal accounts were part of the check, so these inboxes are not described here. A business that answers customers through Instagram should look at the settings of its own account type before relying on the switch.

Only the account-wide reach of the switch and its two-way effect are confirmed; the rest waits for a dated check, and this page will carry a new date if one is made.

Traces outside the inbox: stories and profile

Read receipts and activity status belong to messaging. Neither setting changes what the rest of Instagram records about your account, and two areas matter most.

  • Stories: any story you play while logged in puts your account name on that story’s list of viewers, regardless of any inbox setting.
  • Profile visits and searches: an owner has no register of visitors. Even so, looking a person up or opening their profile can place your account among the suggestions Instagram shows them. This is explained in Profile visits, searches and Instagram’s suggestions list.

The inbox settings stop at the inbox: neither the story list nor the suggestions answer to anything on this page.

This page does not address readers whose real concern is being named as a viewer of somebody’s story. Receipts and status have no effect on that list at all. The routes to a story that do not involve your account, and the ones that fail, are compared in Watching a story unseen: why blocking afterwards fails.

Public profiles viewed without signing in

Every signal described above depends on being logged in to Instagram. A lookup through InstaViewer asks you for no login, so none of these signals can attach to your account.

  • The lookup page has no messages, so there is no receipt to send or to suppress.
  • You do not sign in, so no activity status of yours is shown.
  • No action controls: nothing on the lookup page can like a post, leave a comment, react or reply, so no action can leave the page by accident.
  • Your own account: in a lookup, your account is left unused, a point that Watching a story unseen: why blocking afterwards fails develops for stories.

The lookup covers public accounts only, and it is not a substitute for the inbox: messages still have to be read in the app, under the settings described earlier. To see what an account shows to the public, look at a public profile while you stay logged out with nothing more than its username.

Read receipt questions

Is it possible to read a message without ‘Seen’ appearing?

Yes, but the setting built for it is Read receipts, and it covers every chat at once. While it is off, you also stop seeing whether others have opened your own messages. For one sender only, restriction is the per-person route.

Why can ‘Seen’ still appear after read receipts are switched off?

In a one-to-one chat on a personal account, it should not: with the switch off, ‘Seen’ stops showing in both directions. Group chats and business inboxes fell outside that check, so a notice there has no confirmed explanation.

Can ‘Seen’ be switched off for just one conversation?

No. Instagram offers no per-chat control; the read receipts switch applies to all chats together. Restricting one person hides your read status from that person alone, with other side effects on comments and messages.

How can an account appear offline to everyone on Instagram?

Turn off activity status, a switch separate from read receipts. It is reciprocal: while it is off, you no longer see when other accounts are active either. Read receipts remain as they were.

Does turning off read receipts hide which stories I watched?

No. Read receipts concern messages only. A story played from your signed-in account still shows your name in its viewer list, whatever the inbox settings are.
